Getting Started and Teacher Guidance
Before embarking on the Health and Relationships programme, we recommend reading our guidance document which outlines the programme's structure and delivery, its topics and content, how to approach curriculum planning and how to measure progress and impact.
To access this document, click on the Teacher Planning tab and select the board Health and Relationships overview.
Choose Safe teaching and learning environment to get guidance on putting into practice principles which will help you establish ground rules to create a relaxed and open atmosphere in the classroom where the students feel comfortable to ask questions and where safe discussion is facilitated.
Guidance on engaging with parents provides practical support on how to communicate details about the programme with parents. This advice can kickstart the consultation process with parents and assist when responding to any questions or concerns that they may have.
In addition to this document, by clicking on the Parental Support tab, you can find a host of ready-made presentations, PDFs and letters which can be used in consultation meetings and when corresponding with parents. These provide information about what the resources are comprised of and explain what the students will be learning.
On the Teacher Planning page, you will also find Progression Grids which break down the skills and knowledge covered in each year group and how the learning progresses every year.
Programme Topics
After selecting one of the topics within the programme, you will see a Lesson Resources tab which shows Channels for each year group and a Topic Overview tab which provides an summary of the topic and an outline of the themes covered.
Within the topic, each year group has its own sub-topic or theme.
By clicking on the year group Channel, you will see the resources required to run lessons on this topic for this year group.
Each Channel has a child-led, age-appropriate video introducing the topic and 3 separate lesson plans including activities and presentations. The videos are designed to enable pupils to learn in a non-threatening, familiar and relaxed way. This, in turn, allows teachers to develop consistency and distancing techniques which pupils respond well to.
The comprehensive lesson plans include curriculum links and learning outcomes.
The activities provide ways of finding evidence of impact and assessment, and are also used to embed learning and explore the topic further.
The learning is developed from lesson to lesson as the students are presented with variations of the overall topic.
This structure is replicated for every topic in every year group.
