Sandbox AR
Sandbox AR is a brand new augmented reality scene maker. Using the free app, it is possible to create and share a sandbox with pupils and for them to create and share with you and others. A sandbox is made up of a stage on which you can place objects from a wide range of subjects, all in augmented reality. Objects can be moved around, resized and rotated and labelled. Teachers and pupils can act as a virtual camera crew, recording the sandbox with voice over and sharing the results. Sandboxes are shared simply, via a QR code which can be read off the screen or on printed materials, making them incredibly flexible to embed however and wherever you like.
Your Espresso subscription includes pre-built Lessons and Sandboxes available in the Augmented Reality Channel.
Quick Start Guide
Sandbox AR can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. Please note, Sandbox AR is compatible with a 5th Gen iPad and up (2017).
- From the main screen, tap 'Create new'
-
Scan a flat surface e.g. a table top or floor. Tap 'Add Stage'.
-
Choose a stage from the menu (you can tap to see what they look like).
-
Place the stage and then tap 'Add Model' to begin adding objects to the stage.
-
Select a model to add from the model library. The library is arranged by category such as ‘history’ and ‘animals’, then sub categories such as ‘Ancient Greek’, ‘Maya’ and ‘Fresh Water’, ‘Land’ etc.
-
Once you have selected a model, choose where to place it. To change the size, pinch and zoom. To rotate move your finger left and right over the model.
-
To save a sandbox, tap the menu then select 'Save'. Give your sandbox a name then tap 'Save'.
-
To share, tap the menu and select select 'Share'. Once you have tapped ‘Share’, the sandbox QR can be shared in several ways such as iMessage, email, Airdrop etc. (can be dependent on device permissions in school).
If you're unsure where to get started with Sandbox AR, log into Espresso and explore the pre-built Lessons and Sandboxes available in the Augmented Reality Channel.
What happened to the AR apps that were previously available in Espresso?
The apps that were previously available in Espresso are no longer compatible with most devices and so we have taken the decision at this time to retire them from the Augmented Reality Channel. These will temporarily still be available within Espresso and you can find the trigger images by searching “Augmented Reality”.
