What is phonics?
Phonics is a method used for teaching children how to read and write the alphabetic language. It is done by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language and the letters. It helps children identify the different sounds that distinguish one word from another. Written language is comparable to a code - knowing the sound that individual letters make when they are combined will help children decode words when they read. It will also help children know which letters, or combination of letters are needed when writing words.
Why is phonics important?
It is important for children to use letter sound relationship because English uses letters, or combinations of letters to represent sounds. Phonics teaches this information to allow children to learn to read. Children learn the sounds that each letter makes and how a change in the order of letters changes a words meaning.
There is a wealth of research to support the teaching of phonics through the original Letters and Sounds framework, as well as the latest research and guidance underpinning the teaching of phonics through a systematic synthetic programme in the 2021 Reading Framework. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), which is the government-designated What Works Centre for Education, has provided authoritative advice on evidence to improve teaching and learning and considers phonics to be one of the most secure and best-evidenced areas of pedagogy and recommends all schools use a systematic approach.
